| The Sussex County AIDS Committee, Inc. (SCAC) is dedicated to providing services to residents of Sussex County, Delaware who are affected by HIV or AIDS.
Mission
Statement HIV/AIDS has produced a profoundly serious human crisis, which
challenges contemporary society in a way that very few events have.
Our response to this crisis will be a measure of our world and
ourselves. The Sussex County AIDS
Committee is committed to: -
Working
to insure that people with HIV/AIDS and their loved ones secure all benefits
to which they are entitled in order to have the highest quality of life
possible; -
Providing
services to people, using whatever resources that SCAC has at its disposal; -
Serving
as a community catalyst to construct a response to HIV/AIDS with other
agencies and institutions, recognizing that no single agency is capable of
doing it alone; and -
Working
to reduce the spread of HIV infection in the community by disseminating
accurate information through the media, through publications, and through
professional and community educational programs. Volunteers seeking to meet the evolving needs of those
living with AIDS established SCAC in 1985.
Initially, these efforts were focused on the provision of hospice care.
However, broader needs quickly became evident and the community
responded with dedicated volunteers and faithful financial support. Within ten years, SCAC had grown from an all-volunteer
organization working out of members’ homes to a professionally staffed
agency with owned space for programs and general administration.
Scope of services and the number of clients receiving those services
had similarly grown during that first decade. In just over five years (1995 – 2002), the number of
unduplicated clients receiving supportive services from SCAC has increased
three-fold, from 48 to more than 200. Today,
four full-time staff persons and a cadre of volunteers provide a myriad of
supportive services for individuals in Sussex County living with HIV or AIDS.
